What Did Fleetwood Mac Play During Their First Concert with Stevie Nicks?
When many fans think of Fleetwood Mac, they immediately think of the irreplaceable voice of Stevie Nicks. However, Nicks wasn’t an original member of the band — in late 1974, she and Lindsey Buckingham joined the band, and on May 15, 1975, they played their first live show with the band, creating the iconic Fleetwood Mac lineup that would go down in rock history.
The crowd at that show, at the Civic Center Theater in El Paso, Texas, may not have known it yet, the sound of Fleetwood Mac was about to change forever. So what did the band play on that momentous night?
When and How Did Stevie Nicks Join Fleetwood Mac?

Just five months earlier, Nicks and Buckingham were still promoting their debut album Buckingham Nicks, a project that hadn’t seen commercial success but had caught the ear of drummer Mick Fleetwood. In a twist of fate, Fleetwood had stopped by Sound City Studios in Los Angeles while scouting for a new recording space. Producer Keith Olsen played him the Buckingham Nicks track “Frozen Love” as a demonstration of the studio’s sound. Impressed by Buckingham’s guitar work, Fleetwood asked if he’d consider joining Fleetwood Mac.
Buckingham agreed, on one condition: his musical partner and then-girlfriend Nicks had to be included, too. Fleetwood agreed, and by New Year’s Eve 1974, Nicks and Buckingham were officially invited to join. Just two weeks later, on January 26, 1975, the new five-piece Fleetwood Mac lineup began rehearsing together.

The band’s first show with Nicks and Buckingham took place nearly five months later in El Paso. The setlist reflected their transitional state, with the band performing classic Fleetwood Mac songs from their earlier years alongside a few tracks from Buckingham Nicks. That night’s set included “Spare Me a Little of Your Love,” “Station Man,” “Rhiannon” (which hadn’t yet been recorded), and a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Oh Well.” Nicks performed “Rhiannon” and “Landslide,” two songs that would later become fan favorites when they appeared on the band’s self-titled 1975 album released in July. Just two years later, their album Rumours would become one of the best-selling albums of all time.
